Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi arrives in Casablanca for Wydad appointment
Tunisian coach Nasreddine Nabi is expected to arrive in Casablanca on Wednesday evening to complete his appointment as head coach of Moroccan club Wydad Athletic Club.
According to informed sources cited by Africasoccer, Nabi is expected to arrive at around 22:00 local time as he prepares to sign his contract and lead the Red Team into the next stage of the season.
Wydad are hoping the appointment will help restore stability, improve results and strengthen their challenge for the club’s objectives this season.
Naim Aarab lined up as assistant coach
Naim Aarab has been selected to serve as Nabi’s first assistant, according to the same sources.
The proposed technical staff also includes a second Tunisian assistant coach and a Tunisian fitness trainer, both of whom could experience Moroccan football for the first time. Their appointments remain subject to the outcome of negotiations expected to continue in the coming hours.
Wydad officials have also insisted that Nabi include a Moroccan coach or a former club player in his backroom staff.
The requirement is intended to ensure the presence of someone familiar with Wydad’s environment and traditions, while helping the technical team keep track of the details of the Moroccan professional league.
Nabi brings experience across African football
Nabi arrives with coaching experience across several African leagues, having managed clubs including Young Africans of Tanzania, Al-Merrikh and Al-Hilal of Sudan, Ismaily of Egypt, Al-Ahly Benghazi of Libya, Vita Club and TP Mazembe of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
During his time at Young Africans, he won domestic titles and guided the Tanzanian side to the final of the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2022-23 season.
He later coached Morocco’s Royal Army, but lost the league title and Throne Cup to Raja Casablanca during the closing stages of the respective competitions.
Nabi also had a spell with South African side Kaizer Chiefs, winning the South African Cup in the 2024-25 season.
From Raja Casablanca to Wydad
The Tunisian returned to Moroccan football when Raja Casablanca appointed him in June. However, his time with the Green Eagles ended before the start of the current season following tensions in his relationship with Portuguese sporting director Rogerio Matias.
He is now expected to take charge of Wydad, Raja’s Casablanca rivals, as the Red Team seek a fresh start.
The club’s supporters will hope Nabi’s experience across African football can help Wydad regain their balance, produce positive results and compete strongly for their targets this season.
