Newcastle complete signing of Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo

Newcastle United have completed the signing of Lille forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo after the Belgium international arrived in Tyneside on Monday evening to undergo his medical.

The attacker later met Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle before finalising the move, which ends a pursuit that began during Eddie Howe’s time in charge of the club.

Fernandez-Pardo said Jaissle’s desire to bring him to Newcastle played an important part in his decision.

“He really showed how much he wanted me to be here,” the Belgium international said.

“In terms of my own career progression, it made complete sense to come so I didn’t hesitate at all.

“I know the club, I know about the stadium, I know it’s a fantastic atmosphere. I’ve followed the team.

“I’m still young, I’m still hungry, and that’s why I’m here, and I want to make that progress with Newcastle. I can’t wait to start the wonderful adventure here.”

Newcastle have monitored Fernandez-Pardo for some time, with his versatility one of the main attractions for Jaissle. The 21-year-old can operate in several attacking positions, giving the Newcastle head coach additional depth as he develops his squad.

The move had appeared increasingly likely after Lille omitted Fernandez-Pardo from their squad for last week’s 2-2 draw with Paris St-Germain. He had also been training separately from Lille’s first-team group while the situation surrounding his future was resolved.

Fernandez-Pardo’s attacking numbers help explain Newcastle’s interest. He created 21 big chances last season, the second-highest total among players aged 21 or younger across Europe’s top five leagues.

He also recorded 184 touches in the opposition penalty area, ranking fifth in that age group, and had 30 shots on target. His combined total of 13 goals and assists placed him seventh.

The transfer represents the latest stage in a long-standing Newcastle interest in a player regarded as capable of contributing in more than one forward role. His arrival gives Jaissle another attacking option, while Fernandez-Pardo begins what he described as a “wonderful adventure” with the club.

The Belgium international’s move also brings a formal conclusion to his time at Lille, where uncertainty over his position had grown in the days before the transfer was completed. His exclusion from the matchday squad against Paris St-Germain and separate training away from the first-team group preceded his arrival in Tyneside.

Fernandez-Pardo said his age, ambition and desire to continue progressing were central to his choice. He also pointed to his familiarity with Newcastle, the club’s stadium and the atmosphere around the team as reasons for welcoming the opportunity.

Newcastle will now hope his statistical record and ability to play across the attack translate into a significant contribution under Jaissle.
