Real Madrid’s early-season momentum faces a five-match September squeeze

Real Madrid will play five matches in 20 days during September, including four La Liga fixtures and the opening game of their Champions League campaign, as Jose Mourinho’s side faces an early test of its ability to maintain a perfect start to the season.

The Spanish club ended August with three victories from three league matches, collecting nine points from a possible nine. They began with a 2-1 win against Espanyol, followed that with a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad and completed the month by beating Malaga 4-0.

Those results gave Real Madrid 10 goals from their opening fixtures, while they conceded only two.

Their demanding September schedule begins on Friday, 4 September, when they face Real Betis at La Cartuja. Four days later, on Tuesday, 8 September, Real Madrid will open their Champions League campaign by hosting Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The team returns to La Liga on Saturday, 12 September, with Rayo Vallecano visiting the Santiago Bernabeu. That will be Real Madrid’s second home match of the month.

Mourinho’s players then face another quick turnaround. They travel to play Elche at the Martinez Valero on Tuesday, 15 September, only three days after the meeting with Rayo Vallecano.

September concludes with the most difficult fixture on paper: the Madrid derby against Atletico de Madrid. The match will be played at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday, 20 September, with kick-off scheduled for 16:15 local time, or 14:15 GMT.

That derby will be Real Madrid’s final match before the international break.

The schedule presents a significant physical and tactical challenge. Real Madrid will play three of their five matches away from home, leaving them with only two fixtures at the Santiago Bernabeu. The Champions League opener also falls between two league games, increasing the pressure on Mourinho to manage his squad carefully.

The manager will need to monitor the condition of his players and distribute playing time effectively across the demanding sequence. The short gap between several of the fixtures leaves little opportunity for recovery before the next test begins.

Real Madrid’s unbeaten opening month has created strong momentum, but September will challenge that progress across two competitions and three away venues. The visit to La Cartuja is followed almost immediately by the European meeting with Inter Milan, before the side returns to domestic action against Rayo Vallecano.

The matches against Elche and Atletico de Madrid will then complete the run, with the derby providing the final examination before the players leave for international duty.

After the meeting with Atletico de Madrid, Real Madrid will have a break because of the international period. They are not scheduled to return to competitive action until the weekend of 10 and 11 October, when they will host Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabeu.
