2026 Ballon d'Or

Former Morocco captain Mehdi Benatia has questioned Lionel Messi’s fifth-place finish in the 2026 Ballon d’Or rankings, expressing doubts over whether the Argentine deserved to finish so high despite his impressive performances at the FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the French YouTube programme Les Affranchis, Benatia said he was surprised by Messi’s position, particularly in comparison with players who competed in European football throughout the season.

According to French outlet Foot Mercato, the former defender questioned whether Messi’s performances for Inter Miami justified placing him ahead of Bayern Munich winger Michael Olise, who finished ninth.

“He spends the entire year in Miami and then finishes fifth? Have European football fans watched him more than Michael Olise, who finished ninth?” Benatia said.

The former Juventus and Bayern Munich defender acknowledged Messi’s quality at the 2026 World Cup but maintained that the Argentine’s overall ranking was difficult to understand.

“Of course, he was exceptional at the World Cup, and the entire team plays for him. All respect to him. He is almost our age, but how can you tell me Messi is fifth?” he added.

Benatia also questions Rodri’s position

Benatia also challenged the fourth-place finish of Manchester City midfielder Rodri, questioning how the Spaniard secured such a high ranking after missing a significant portion of the 2025-2026 season through injury.

“How can he be fourth when he only played four months throughout the season?” Benatia asked.

Rodri, however, enjoyed success with Spain on the international stage, helping his country win the 2026 FIFA World Cup and receiving the tournament’s Best Player award.

His international achievements appeared to contribute significantly to his position in the Ballon d’Or rankings, despite his limited involvement at club level during the season.

Messi’s World Cup campaign sparks debate

Messi’s performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup strengthened expectations that he could win a record-extending ninth Ballon d’Or.

The Argentine captain contributed eight goals and four assists during the tournament, taking his direct goal contributions to 12 as his country progressed to the final.

Argentina ultimately lost 1-0 to Spain, while Messi finished fifth in the Ballon d’Or rankings.

England international Harry Kane won the award for the first time in his career, with Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé finishing second and Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal third. Rodri and Messi completed the top five.

Benatia’s remarks have added to the discussion about the relative importance of club performances and international tournaments when determining the winner of football’s most prestigious individual award.

Benatia’s career in European football

Benatia represented Morocco in 66 international matches during his playing career and featured for several prominent European clubs, including Roma, Bayern Munich, Juventus and Marseille.

His comments have drawn attention to the debate over how the Ballon d’Or rankings reflect players’ performances across different competitions and stages of the football season.
