Algerian Mohamed Amoura set for Nice switch in bid to revive his career

Algerian forward Mohamed Amoura is closing in on a move to Nice, with the transfer offering the player an opportunity to revive his career despite concerns among some supporters in Algeria over the French club’s recent controversies.

The deal has not yet been officially completed, but negotiations are understood to be progressing well. Amoura is expected in the French Riviera on Monday to undergo his medical before completing a proposed loan move with an option to buy for an estimated €20m.

Nice have reportedly resisted interest from Al-Sadd and moved ahead of several European clubs in the race for the Algeria international. Rennes, Udinese and Lyon were also among those interested.

Lyon and Marseille had been viewed by some Algerian supporters as more attractive destinations because of the strong support associated with both clubs. Amoura’s expected decision to join Nice has therefore prompted some criticism on social media.

Concerns over Nice’s recent controversies

Some of the reaction surrounding Amoura’s proposed transfer is linked to issues involving Nice in recent years.

The case involving Youcef Atal remains particularly prominent. Nice suspended the Algerian full-back in autumn 2023 after he shared and later deleted a video containing antisemitic content.

Atal was subsequently sentenced on appeal to eight months in prison, suspended, and fined €45,000 for inciting hatred on religious grounds.

The Christophe Galtier affair has also continued to influence perceptions of the club. The former Nice manager was accused of discriminating against Muslim players but was ultimately acquitted.

There was also frustration surrounding Hicham Boudaoui and the way his future was handled. The midfielder is now expected to join Al-Ittihad as Nice implement cost-cutting measures.

Nice had previously prevented Boudaoui from leaving during earlier transfer windows. An attempted move to Galatasaray also failed after the midfielder wanted a change of surroundings.

His situation has consequently created the impression that he was retained for an extended period before eventually becoming available for transfer.

A fresh opportunity for Amoura

Despite the concerns away from the pitch, Nice represents a significant sporting opportunity for Amoura.

The Algerian made his breakthrough at Union Saint-Gilloise, where he scored 22 goals in 45 appearances. He subsequently moved to Wolfsburg and quickly demonstrated his attacking qualities in Germany.

Amoura scored eight league goals last season, although his campaign ended with Wolfsburg being relegated to the second division.

His influence has also declined since the beginning of 2026, while the latter part of his time in Germany was accompanied by some tension.

A move to Nice could therefore provide Amoura with the fresh start he needs. The Algerian remains highly regarded for his attacking ability, but he now needs to rediscover his best form.

The transfer is still awaiting official confirmation, with the medical examination and final stages of the agreement expected to determine whether Amoura will begin the next chapter of his career on the French Riviera.
