Kane wants long-term Bayern Munich deal as contract talks hit length dispute

Bayern Munich and Harry Kane have reached an impasse over the length of a proposed contract extension for the England captain, whose current agreement with the German club runs until 2027.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, the main disagreement is over the duration of the new deal. Kane is seeking a long-term extension, while Bayern Munich are discussing a contract lasting two further seasons.

The club are keen to secure Kane’s future amid continued interest from outside Germany. The striker has received offers from abroad from time to time, including some from Saudi Arabia, while he has also been linked on several occasions with a move to Barcelona.

Kane said negotiations had begun but stressed that an agreement was unlikely to be reached quickly after Bayern Munich’s 5-1 victory over Stuttgart in their opening league match.

“The first meeting was this week. But these things are not decided in a week or two. There will be many more discussions about the details,” he said.

Asked about the specific terms being discussed, Kane added: “I’m not going to talk about the details here.”

The striker gave a positive assessment of the talks and indicated that neither side was currently concerned by the lack of an agreement.

“Things are going well, so everything is fine so far. We will continue the dialogue in the coming weeks and see what happens,” he said.

Kane also acknowledged that his age was an important factor in determining the structure of any new contract. He is 33 and said the proposed agreement might not necessarily be the final contract of his career.

“There are many factors that affect a contract like this: I’m 33 years old, so this may not be my last contract, but it is certainly an important one for me. I need to be happy, and the club also needs to be happy,” Kane said.

“The good thing is that neither side is worried. At the moment, it is simply open discussions, as is the case with any contract in my career.”

Despite the difference over the proposed length of the deal, Kane said he hoped the two sides would eventually reach an agreement.

“I would like to renew my contract for a long period. But we will see how long it will be in the end. I’m sure we will reach an agreement that satisfies both sides. I hope so,” he said.

Kane has won the Bundesliga’s top-scorer award three times since joining Bayern Munich and remains a central figure for the club. His current deal is due to expire in 2027, but Bayern are attempting to extend it during the coming period.

Bayern Munich chief executive Jan-Christian Dreesen also expressed confidence that the negotiations would be concluded successfully, suggesting the timing of an announcement was less important than the outcome.

“The harmony is perfect, so we are completely reassured about this matter. Whether it happens a day earlier or later does not matter,” Dreesen said.
