Michel-Ange Balikwisha returns to Belgium with La Gantoise in Celtic FC loan move
La Gantoise have completed the signing of 25-year-old winger Michel-Ange Balikwisha from Celtic FC on a season-long loan, with an option to buy set at 3.5 million euros.
The move brings the Congolese forward back to the Jupiler Pro League after a mixed spell in Scotland. Balikwisha previously established himself in Belgian football and will now have the opportunity to revive his career with La Gantoise.
The club officially confirmed his arrival as it strengthens its attacking options for the current campaign. Balikwisha is expected to bring pace, directness and experience of the Belgian game to the side, while giving the coaching staff an additional attacking solution.
His return to the country represents an important change of direction after his experience with Celtic FC. The loan agreement allows him to re-establish himself in a familiar league, where he has already made an impression in the past, while La Gantoise retain the possibility of making the transfer permanent for 3.5 million euros.
Balikwisha joins what the source describes as the Buffalos. The nickname distinguishes La Gantoise from KRC Genk, whose players are known as the Schtroumpfs.
For the player, the transfer offers the chance to secure more regular playing time and build momentum through a consistent run of performances. It also provides a route back into contention for the Congo national team, where sustained club form could help him push for more regular selection.
The agreement has now been completed, meaning Balikwisha will join the La Gantoise squad as preparations continue for the next fixtures of the season.
His arrival gives the Belgian club another option in the final third and adds a player already familiar with the demands of domestic football. La Gantoise will hope the return to the Jupiler Pro League can help Balikwisha rediscover his best level after an uncertain period in Scotland.
The season-long deal includes the option for La Gantoise to sign him permanently at the end of the loan. For now, the immediate objective is for the winger to settle into the group, regain regular football and produce the performances that could lead to a longer-term stay in Belgium.
