Erling Haaland scored twice as Manchester City recovered from their midweek Champions League defeat by Paris St Germain to beat Ipswich Town 3-2 and make it seven Premier League wins from seven.
The result preserved City’s position at the top of the table, despite a difficult week off the pitch. The club’s appeal against a ruling that it breached 114 Premier League financial rules remains unresolved, while City continue to deny any wrongdoing.
Phil Foden put Manchester City ahead, but Ipswich responded through Daizen Maeda. Haaland restored the hosts’ lead before half-time with a header from Mateo Kovacic’s cross.
The Norway striker extended City’s advantage in the 69th minute, powering beyond Abdoul Ouattara before finding the bottom corner with a low finish. An offside decision denied him a hat-trick, while Zian Flemming gave Ipswich hope by converting a stoppage-time penalty.
City held on to secure the points and maintain their perfect league record.
Chelsea beat Everton 2-0 in Saturday’s early match, with Pedro Neto scoring both goals in a victory overshadowed by an injury to goalkeeper Emi Martinez.
Everton kept Chelsea out during a physical first half that featured five yellow cards, but the visitors needed only 43 seconds after the restart to take the lead. Jorrel Hato’s cut-back from the byline found Neto, who swept the ball home.
Martinez then suffered a head injury in a collision with Jarrad Branthwaite. Medical staff treated the Argentina goalkeeper on the pitch before he was strapped to a stretcher and taken off, with 11 minutes added on.
Neto completed his double in the 90th minute, reacting first after Jordan Henderson’s free-kick was blocked by the wall and placing his finish into the bottom corner. The defeat was Everton’s first of the season.
“What we know is he (Martinez) left the stadium conscious and right now he is in the hospital doing precautionary tests,” said Xabi Alonso. “It was concussion but more than that I saw only one clip. Hopefully it won’t be too bad but we need to wait.”
Martinez’s injury gave 21-year-old goalkeeper Mike Penders his Premier League debut. Chelsea kept a league clean sheet for the first time in 23 matches.
“We need a clean sheet, to be honest. I think we did a very good game. Emi deserved this, Mike did as well,” Alonso added.
Liverpool came from behind to win 2-1 at Brentford, who were reduced to 10 men shortly before half-time when Yehor Yarmolyuk was sent off for head-butting Jeremy Jacquet. The previously unbeaten hosts had taken the lead through Keane Lewis-Potter, but Victor Munoz levelled in the 62nd minute before Alexander Isak scored the winner eight minutes later from Bradley Barcola’s assist.
Brentford finished with nine men after Vitaly Janelt received a second yellow card for fouling substitute Rio Ngumoha. Liverpool moved above Brentford into fifth place with 12 points, one behind fourth-placed Chelsea on 13.
Fulham climbed off the bottom of the table after Alex Iwobi’s 33rd-minute goal secured a first league win of the season, a 1-0 home victory over Hull City. The result gave new manager Alvaro Arbeloa a long-awaited league success and moved Fulham up to 15th.
Newcastle United host Aston Villa later on Saturday.
