Mohamed Fofana: Ivory Coast midfielder joins Chaves from Basaksehir

Ivory Coast midfielder Mohamed Fofana has swapped Basaksehir for Chaves, completing a move to the Portuguese club on 28 August 2026.

The 21-year-old central midfielder joins Chaves as the latest step in a career that has taken him between clubs in Turkey, Georgia and Portugal. His move takes him from the Turkish Super Lig to Liga Portugal 2, where he will continue his career with GD Chaves.

Fofana was previously with Basaksehir, having returned to the Istanbul club after a short spell at Sakaryaspor. He joined Sakaryaspor from Basaksehir on a free transfer on 31 January 2026 before returning to Basaksehir in the summer, again without a transfer fee.

The midfielder had not made an appearance for Basaksehir during the opening part of the 2026-27 campaign. He was listed without an appearance in either the Super Lig or the Uefa Conference League qualifying rounds before his move to Chaves.

Fofana first joined Basaksehir in July 2023. Since then, he has also spent time on loan at Genclik Gucu and Dinamo Batumi. His spell with Dinamo Batumi began in January 2025, before he returned to Basaksehir at the end of that year.

Born in Vieil-Ousrou, Fofana stands 1.87m tall and is predominantly right-footed. He operates in central midfield and is the sole Ivory Coast national in his player profile.

The transfer gives Fofana a fresh club in Portugal after his recent changes of team in Turkey. Chaves are competing in Liga Portugal 2, while Basaksehir remain in the Super Lig, marking a change of league and country for the young midfielder.

Fofana’s market value is listed at €175,000, the same figure recorded during his recent move to Basaksehir. He has now joined Chaves from Basaksehir, completing the transfer on 28 August 2026.
