Ghana forward James Ampofo joins Esbjerg in €100,000 Denmark move

Ghanaian centre-forward James Ampofo has joined Danish club Esbjerg fB from Norwegian side Strmsgodset for €100,000.

The 22-year-old has signed a contract with Esbjerg running until 30 June 2029. He moves to the Danish 1. Division after a short spell with Strmsgodset, who he joined on 25 August following the end of a loan at IK Start.

Ampofo’s transfer to Esbjerg was completed on 26 August, one day after he returned to Strmsgodset. His move represents a switch from Norway’s OBOS-ligaen to Denmark’s second tier.

The Cape Coast-born striker has recorded nine goals and two assists in 33 OBOS-ligaen appearances, while also making 27 appearances in Norway’s Eliteserien. He has additionally scored five goals in seven NM-Cup matches.

Ampofo began his senior career with Semper Fi FC before moving to Greek club Episkopi on a free transfer in August 2022. He joined Raufoss from Episkopi for another free transfer in August 2023, then moved to Strmsgodset for €80,000 in July 2025.

The forward spent part of the 2025-26 campaign on loan at IK Start, where he made 18 appearances, scored three goals and provided one assist. He returned to Strmsgodset before immediately completing his move to Esbjerg.

Ampofo is 1.84m tall and prefers his right foot. His arrival gives Esbjerg a Ghanaian striker with experience across Norwegian league and cup competitions, as well as a recent spell in Denmark’s neighbouring Scandinavian football market.

Esbjerg have now secured Ampofo’s services on a deal that keeps him at the club until the end of June 2029.
