Riyad Mahrez weighs lucrative Saudi Pro League move after leaving Al-Ahli

Riyad Mahrez is considering his next move after becoming a free agent, with Al-Shabab and Al-Ettifaq in talks to sign the Algeria winger.

The two Saudi Pro League clubs are understood to be prepared to offer the 35-year-old an annual salary of about $10m. Mahrez is now assessing the proposals as he considers whether to continue his career in Saudi Arabia.

Mahrez left Al-Ahli without a club after a notable spell with the Jeddah side. During his time there, he scored 37 goals and provided 46 assists in 122 appearances. His achievements also included winning two Asian Champions League titles.

The former Manchester City player has attracted interest from Europe, with AS Roma and Como among the clubs linked with a possible move. However, no offer has led to an agreement, leaving Al-Shabab and Al-Ettifaq in a stronger position as they pursue the Algerian international.

Mahrez’s retirement from international football could also work in favour of the Saudi clubs. Without the demands of international duty, he would be available to focus entirely on his club commitments, an advantage for potential suitors seeking a regular contributor throughout the season.

As a player without a contract, Mahrez is not tied to the usual restrictions associated with the summer transfer market. That status allows him to negotiate directly with interested clubs and complete a move outside the normal structure of a transfer between two teams.

The winger is therefore weighing the financial terms on the table before deciding where his future lies. Al-Shabab and Al-Ettifaq have both opened discussions to secure his services, while the lack of a concrete European proposal has increased the likelihood of another chapter in the Saudi Pro League.

No agreement has yet been finalised, but the salary being discussed would make either Saudi option a significant opportunity for Mahrez. His record at Al-Ahli, combined with his previous experience at Manchester City, has ensured that he remains a sought-after player despite becoming a free agent.
