Eastern Company took a surprise 2-0 lead over Al Ahly during the first half of their Egyptian League opening-week match, with Ali Ehab and Mohamed Essam finding the net before the break.

Ali Ehab opened the scoring after a cross from the left was headed away by Al Ahly defender Ahmed Nabil Kouka, but only as far as the Eastern Company midfielder. Ehab controlled the loose ball before striking powerfully from outside the penalty area into the left side of the goal.

Eastern Company then doubled their advantage through Mohamed Essam. Emad Mahoub produced an excellent through ball from inside his own half, finding Essam in space. The forward carried the ball towards the penalty area and finished with a low shot into the bottom-left corner.

The home side had the opportunity to extend their lead further when the referee awarded them a penalty after Karim Fouad was judged to have brought down Ahmed Ismail inside the area. However, Mohamed Hamdy Ibrahim sent his spot-kick wide of the left post.

The scoreline came despite Al Ahly dominating possession, with the Egyptian giants holding 72% of the ball compared with Eastern Company’s 28%. Al Ahly attempted to build attacks through a series of passes in midfield and maintained sustained pressure, but Eastern Company’s defensive organisation limited the visitors’ clear opportunities.

Al Ahly also appealed for another penalty when Karim Fouad was involved in a challenge with Ahmed Khaled Kaloosha, though the referee waved play on.

Mohamed Hany sent a cross from the right towards the penalty area, but the delivery sailed too high and went out for a goal kick. Al Ahly were later awarded a free-kick on the right side of Eastern Company’s half, which Achraf Bencharki’s cross into the box was cleared by the defence.

Bencharki also moved in from the left and played a pass towards the centre of the area, but the ball lacked accuracy and travelled beyond all the intended targets without creating danger.

Eastern Company’s Ahmed Nader Hawaash was flagged offside after taking up an incorrect position. On another attack, Hawaash carried the ball towards the Al Ahly penalty area and tried to shoot, but the visitors’ defence covered the effort well.

Mahmoud Kahraba almost helped Al Ahly create an opening with a fine through pass, but Ahmed Nabil Kouka made an important defensive intervention in front of an Eastern Company player, allowing the ball to pass without threatening the goal.

Eastern Company continued trying to gain control of possession during isolated periods, while much of the play became concentrated in midfield and produced little danger at either end. They also earned a foul after Ali Ehab was penalised for a handball in the middle of the pitch.

There was a short break for the players to drink water and catch their breath before the first half continued. Al Ahly’s attacking pressure remained constant, but Eastern Company’s defensive positioning repeatedly prevented them from breaking through.
