Jamal Musiala reveals treatable neurological disorder after Bayern Munich falls

Jamal Musiala says he has been diagnosed with short, temporary absence seizures caused by a neurological disorder after falling during two Bayern Munich friendlies in the space of three days.

The Germany international raised concern when he suddenly collapsed without any obvious contact during Saturday’s match against RB Leipzig. He was away from the ball at the time of the incident.

Musiala was included in Vincent Kompany’s squad for Bayern’s final friendly of the summer against Heidenheim on Tuesday. However, his appearance was brief, with the midfielder falling again shortly after coming on as a substitute before being helped from the pitch by members of the medical team.

The 22-year-old subsequently published a message on Instagram to reassure Bayern supporters and explain what had happened.

“First and foremost, I am fine. I am especially grateful for all your messages and support,” Musiala said.

“I understand that many of you are worried. Today I would like to reassure you and explain the situation a little. I have been diagnosed with short and temporary absence seizures, but they are easily treatable and happen because of a neurological disorder.”

He added: “This condition can lead to the incidents that have happened recently, such as what happened against Leipzig and now in Heidenheim.”

Musiala said the episodes could appear alarming but that he was adapting to the situation and receiving medical care.

“I know they may seem frightening at first, but for me they have now become part of my everyday life. I am receiving the best possible medical treatment and I am very optimistic,” he said.

The Bayern player also stated that he had been told there was no additional health risk beyond the condition itself. He said he had the full backing of the club, his family and those close to him.

“The important thing is that there is no additional health risk beyond this condition. In close consultation and regular communication with specialist doctors, it was my personal wish to face this challenge and continue doing what helps me most to recover, which is simply carrying on with my everyday life and continuing to practise my passion for playing football,” Musiala said.

“I have taken responsibility for this decision. In general, I have a very good feeling and I am moving in the right direction.”

Musiala also said that continuing to play and competing for victories and trophies with Bayern formed an important part of his recovery.

“What helps me most on this journey is continuing to pursue victories and titles with my team, with your wonderful support,” he said.

At the same time, Musiala asked for privacy over the details of his condition. He said he wanted the matter to remain within the circle of people closest to him, Bayern and the medical specialists treating him.

“I hope this helps you understand me a little better. At the same time, I ask for your understanding of my wish to keep this matter within the circle of the people closest to me, the club and the experts,” he added.

Bayern Munich will face Borussia Dortmund in the German Super Cup on Saturday. They then begin their new Bundesliga campaign at home to Stuttgart on Friday, 28 August.
