Newcastle United have opened serious negotiations to sign Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez, with the club seeking an experienced addition before the summer transfer window closes.

The proposed move is part of Newcastle’s attempt to rebuild their squad after losing several important players to rival clubs. Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali have both left the club for north London, joining Arsenal and Tottenham respectively, while England winger Anthony Gordon has moved to Barcelona.

Those departures have left Newcastle particularly short of options in midfield, and Gonzalez has emerged as the main target for the side managed by German coach Matthias Jaissle.

According to The Athletic, Newcastle see the 24-year-old Spain international as the preferred player to restore depth and quality to the centre of the pitch. Gonzalez joined Manchester City from Porto in February 2025 in a deal worth £52m.

The midfielder came through Barcelona’s La Masia academy before moving into senior football and made 41 appearances during the 2025-26 season. That took his total number of games for Manchester City to 59.

However, his position in Pep Guardiola’s plans has weakened since Rodri returned from a cruciate ligament injury. Gonzalez was also limited to a substitute appearance under Enzo Maresca during Manchester City’s 3-0 defeat by Arsenal in the Community Shield last Sunday, coming on in the 78th minute.

Despite playing a reduced role, Gonzalez said earlier this month that he was not concerned about the amount of game time available to him. The latest interest from Newcastle, though, means he could now become the seventh player to arrive at St James’ Park during the current transfer window.

Newcastle have already completed six summer signings, including young midfielders Alage Bamba, 20, and Sean Storer, 18. A deal for Gonzalez would give Jaissle an immediate option with considerably more experience and a greater understanding of the demands of the Premier League.

The club’s need for midfield reinforcements will be tested quickly, with Newcastle due to begin their Premier League campaign against Liverpool next Sunday.

Manchester City will also start their league season on the same day, when they host Bournemouth. That match will be played without Rodri following the completion of his move to Barcelona, increasing the importance of the midfield depth available to Guardiola at the start of the new campaign.

For Newcastle, securing Gonzalez would represent a significant step in addressing the losses of Guimaraes and Tonali. For Manchester City, his potential departure would further alter the midfield group after Rodri’s exit, despite Gonzalez having only joined the club 18 months ago.
