Djibril Sidibé returns to Ligue 1 with newly promoted Le Mans
France’s 2018 World Cup winner Djibril Sidibé has joined newly promoted Ligue 1 side Le Mans FC after leaving Toulouse.
The 34-year-old full-back was a free agent after his contract with Toulouse expired at the start of the summer, but has now agreed a two-year deal with Le Mans, with an option for another season.
Le Mans return to France’s top flight this season after earning promotion from Ligue 2 last campaign.
Sidibé begins new Ligue 1 chapter
Sidibé was a regular for Toulouse last season but was not offered a new contract after the club appointed Jens Berthel Askou as manager.
His move to Le Mans will see the experienced defender continue his Ligue 1 career with a fifth French top-flight club.
Before Toulouse, Sidibé represented ESTAC Troyes, AS Monaco and Lille OSC in the division.
World Cup winner brings experience
Sidibé arrives at Le Mans with significant experience at both club and international level, having been part of France’s squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The defender will now be expected to contribute his experience as Le Mans prepare for the demands of a return to the top flight.
Doubt over opening-day appearance
It remains unclear whether Sidibé will be ready to feature immediately for his new club.
Le Mans begin their Ligue 1 campaign at home against Stade Brestois on Saturday, with the veteran full-back facing a race against time to be available for the opening fixture.
