Fenerbahce and Lyon meet in Istanbul with Champions League progress at stake

Fenerbahce host Olympique Lyonnais at Sukru Saracoglu on Tuesday as the sides begin their Champions League qualification play-off tie, with both clubs aiming to gain an advantage before the second leg.

The match in Istanbul will kick off at 19:00 GMT on 18 August 2026. Fenerbahce, who finished runners-up in the Super Lig last season, will be looking to take their strong European form into the opening game, while fourth-placed Ligue 1 side Lyon will try to recover from an inconsistent pre-season.

The match will be shown on Canal+ in France, Amazon Prime Video in Germany and the United Kingdom, and Paramount+, CBS, Fubo, DAZN and TUDN/ViX in the United States. Viewers in Canada can watch on DAZN, while Canal+ Sport Afrique holds the broadcast rights in Africa. Stan Sport will show the game in Australia, TNT Sports in Brazil and ESPN across Latin America.

The two clubs have rarely met in European competition. Their most recent encounter came in January 2005 during the group stage of the UEFA Europa League, when they played out a goalless draw.

Fenerbahce have progressed through the earlier qualifying rounds without major difficulty. They beat Gornik Zabrze 1-0 in the first leg before drawing 1-1 away in the return fixture. They then defeated Sturm Graz 2-0 and 1-0 across the two legs of the next round.

Despite that progress, Fenerbahce began their domestic campaign with a 2-1 defeat by Genclerbirligi. That result came after a largely encouraging period of preparation for the Istanbul club.

Lyon’s route to the play-offs has been more dramatic. Paulo Fonseca’s side lost 2-1 away to Sparta Prague in the first leg of the previous round, but produced a decisive response in the return match by winning 3-0.

Their preparations have been less consistent, however. Lyon’s recent results included a heavy 4-0 defeat by Betis, adding to the uncertainty around their form before the trip to Turkey.

Fenerbahce are narrow favourites for the first meeting. The available probabilities give the Turkish side a 49% chance of winning, compared with 26% for a draw and 25% for a Lyon victory.

That assessment means Lyon are expected to produce a disciplined performance if they are to leave Istanbul with a favourable result ahead of the return leg. Africafoot’s prediction is a 2-1 victory for Fenerbahce.

The published betting prices also rate the home side as the most likely winner. Fenerbahce are listed at 2.15 to win, with a draw priced at 3.65 and a Lyon victory at 3.53.
