Wilfried Singo chooses Galatasaray continuity despite Newcastle interest

Newcastle’s efforts to strengthen their defence have been complicated by Wilfried Singo’s decision to reject approaches from the Premier League club and remain at Galatasaray for at least another season.

The 25-year-old Ivory Coast international is one of several defensive options being considered by Newcastle as the club begins a rebuilding phase following the departure of manager Eddie Howe. The Magpies have been assessing potential targets across Europe and have identified Singo as a player of particular interest.

According to Turkish journalist Yagız Sabuncuoglu, Newcastle have shown concrete interest in the defender, who is currently playing for Galatasaray.

Galatasaray are understood to be open to selling Singo if they receive an offer that meets their expectations. However, Newcastle’s pursuit is currently facing a significant obstacle because the player has turned down approaches from the English club.

Singo reportedly wants continuity and would prefer to spend another season in the Turkish league. He remains under contract with Galatasaray until June 2030, meaning the Turkish champions are in a strong position should Newcastle or another club return with a proposal.

The defender, who was born in Grand-Bereby, is valued at 23m euros. He earns an annual salary of 8,000,000 euros, equivalent to 5,200,000,000 CFA francs, in Turkey.

Newcastle are looking to reinforce their defensive department during a period of change at the club. The departure of Howe has prompted a wider reassessment of the squad, with the club’s recruitment plans focused on identifying players capable of strengthening the team for the coming campaign.

For now, Singo’s preference is to continue with Galatasaray rather than move to England. His long-term contract and the Turkish club’s willingness to negotiate only for a satisfactory fee mean the situation could still develop, although Newcastle would need to convince both Galatasaray and the player.

Galatasaray are due to begin their Turkish league campaign shortly with a match against Corum FK. Betting company 1xbet lists Galatasaray as strong favourites, with the Istanbul side priced at 1.15 to win. A draw is listed at 6.30, while a victory for Corum FK is priced at 11.00.
