Tottenham snub Folarin Balogun as De Zerbi searches for new striker

Tottenham Hotspur have decided against pursuing a summer move for AS Monaco striker Folarin Balogun as Roberto De Zerbi continues his search for a new attacking option.

The 25-year-old was reportedly offered the opportunity to discuss a potential move to north London, but Mail Sport reports that Tottenham have opted to look elsewhere as they assess their striking options ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Balogun’s impressive campaign with Monaco appeared to make him a strong candidate for clubs looking to strengthen their attack. He scored a career-best 21 goals during the 2025/26 season before carrying that form onto the international stage with the United States.

World Cup spotlight

Balogun finished the 2026 FIFA World Cup as the USMNT’s leading scorer with three goals as the co-hosts progressed through the tournament before being eliminated by Belgium.

His campaign was not without controversy, although the striker himself was not responsible for the incident that generated much of the discussion surrounding him.

Balogun was shown a red card during the United States’ 2-0 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. FIFA later suspended the sanction following intervention from US President Donald Trump, who reportedly spoke to FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

Despite the unusual circumstances surrounding the disciplinary decision, Balogun’s performances at the tournament further raised his profile following a prolific season in France.

De Zerbi wants more firepower

Tottenham have already invested heavily since De Zerbi took charge, although much of the Italian manager’s spending has focused on strengthening the defence and midfield.

The former Brighton manager now wants additional attacking quality and is continuing to consider Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford as one possible solution.

Rashford’s situation remains an important part of Tottenham’s search for greater firepower, with the club weighing up different options rather than committing to Balogun.

The decision to pass on the Monaco forward means Tottenham will have to continue their search for a striker capable of adding goals and competition to De Zerbi’s attack.

Balogun, meanwhile, enters the new season with considerable momentum after combining his best-ever club scoring return with a productive World Cup campaign for the United States.
