Rwanda football federation president Fabrice Shema arrested over bounced cheque allegation
Rwanda Football Federation (FERWAFA) president Fabrice Shema Ngoga has been arrested over allegations that he issued a bounced cheque, according to the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB).
RIB spokesperson Dr Thierry Murangira confirmed Shema’s detention on Tuesday, 11 August.
The FERWAFA president is being held at the RIB Kicukiro Station while investigators continue their inquiries into the allegation and other offences he is accused of.
“RIB has arrested Fabrice Shema on charges of issuing a bounced cheque. He is detained at the RIB Kicukiro Station while investigations continue into other offences he is accused of,” Murangira said.
Shema’s arrest comes after reports that the FERWAFA president had been questioned by investigators.
The latest development places the head of Rwanda’s football governing body at the centre of an ongoing investigation.
RIB has confirmed that the bounced cheque allegation is among the issues for which Shema has been arrested, while investigations into other alleged offences are continuing.
Authorities have not provided further details about those other matters.
The circumstances surrounding the alleged bounced cheque have also not been disclosed by the authorities.
Shema remains in detention at the RIB Kicukiro Station as investigators continue their work.
The RIB has not indicated when the investigation will be completed or provided further information about the other allegations involving the FERWAFA president.
His detention follows the earlier reports that he had been questioned by investigators, although authorities have not disclosed details of what prompted that questioning.
For now, the investigation remains ongoing, with RIB confirming only that Shema has been arrested over the bounced cheque allegation and is also being investigated in connection with other offences.
The development comes as Shema, who heads the Rwanda Football Federation, remains in the custody of the country’s investigative authorities.
Further details about the case have not yet been released by RIB.
Authorities are expected to provide more information as the investigation into the allegations continues.
