Cameroon seek long-awaited WAFCON semi-final return against Nigeria

Cameroon will bid to reach the semi-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in eight years when they face defending champions Nigeria in Sunday’s quarter-final at Stade Larbi Zaouli in Casablanca, Morocco.

The Indomitable Lionesses have not reached the last four since 2018 and must overcome a difficult record against the Super Falcons to extend their campaign. Cameroon have won only one of their 13 previous meetings with Nigeria in the history of the competition, with 11 defeats – including matches decided on penalties – and one draw.

Cameroon head coach Valentine Nguele has made seven changes to the side that started the final group-stage fixture, having rotated her squad earlier in the week.

Easther Kith, Achta Toko, Marie Ngah Manga, Charlene Meyong, Monique Ngock, Michaely Bihina and Ivana Yakana all return to the starting line-up after being rested. Grace Mendoua, Naomi Eto, Colette Ndzana and Myriam Nyadjou are the only players retained from the previous XI.

Cameroon qualified for the knockout stage as Group A winners after collecting seven points from their three matches. They opened the tournament with a 2-1 victory over Mali before defeating Ghana 1-0. A 1-1 draw with Cape Verde in their final group game completed their unbeaten run.

Nigeria’s route to the quarter-finals was less straightforward. The Super Falcons were beaten 3-2 by Malawi in their opening match, but recovered with victories over Zambia and Egypt.

They defeated Zambia 1-0 before producing a six-goal performance against Egypt, winning 6-2 and strengthening their position in the group.

The holders now stand between Cameroon and a place in the last four, with the winner at Stade Larbi Zaouli advancing to the semi-finals. For Cameroon, victory would mark their first return to that stage since 2018 and would end a long wait for another opportunity to challenge for the title.

Nigeria, meanwhile, will be seeking to maintain their position as the competition’s defending champions and continue their response to the surprise opening defeat by Malawi.

Sunday’s meeting therefore brings together a Cameroon side that topped its group without defeat and a Nigeria team that recovered impressively after an early setback. Their recent history gives the Super Falcons the advantage, but Cameroon’s performances in the group stage have secured them home momentum in Morocco and a chance to break their long-standing record against their rivals.
