Guardiola calls Rodri ‘the best’ as Barcelona move draws closer

Pep Guardiola has described Rodri as the best player in his position as the Manchester City midfielder reportedly moves closer to joining Barcelona during the current transfer window.

Reports in Spain and England claim Barcelona are close to completing the deal after convincing Rodri of the club’s project, despite interest from Real Madrid. The Catalan club have agreed personal terms with the player, but have not yet reached a final agreement with Manchester City over the transfer fee.

Guardiola, the former Manchester City manager, praised Rodri’s influence and said his absence would be difficult for any side to overcome.

“Rodri is the best, in his position he is the best,” Guardiola said in comments reported by Sport.

“He can do everything, he has great quality, reads the game brilliantly and is always ready.”

Guardiola added: “He is a top-class player and I do not think there is a team that has a player like him.”

Rodri joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid and has played a central role in the club’s success in recent years. Guardiola said the Spain international had been one of the key reasons for City’s achievements in both the Premier League and the Champions League.

“His presence was one of the reasons for Manchester City’s success in recent years, whether in the Premier League or the Champions League,” he said.

“We have alternatives, but his absence has an impact because he is a player who is difficult to replace.”

Guardiola concluded: “Rodri was one of the best signings in the history of Manchester City.”

Rodri scored Manchester City’s winning goal in the 2023 Champions League final against Inter, securing the club’s first European title.

Barcelona sporting director Deco is reported to have held a meeting with Rodri in Barcelona. The midfielder has also been in contact with manager Hansi Flick before giving his approval to the proposed move.

Although personal terms have been agreed, Barcelona and Manchester City are still negotiating the financial details of the transfer. Rodri is expected to receive a salary close to his current earnings at Manchester City, which are reported to exceed 10 million euros per year.

The reports indicate that Barcelona have made progress in persuading the player to join, while Real Madrid remain interested in signing him. However, no final agreement has yet been reached between the clubs.
