Felix Sanchez moves into contention for Algeria role as Rafael Benitez talks falter

Rafael Benitez has reportedly slipped out of favour in Algeria’s search for a new manager after his demands raised concerns within the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).

The Spanish coach was initially regarded as the leading candidate to replace Vladimir Petkovic, who has left his position in charge of the Algeria national team. However, several local sources now indicate that Benitez’s prospects have weakened during discussions over the role.

According to information published by specialist account F.M.Y., Benitez was not prepared to accept one of the federation’s key conditions: working alongside a locally based coaching team headed by former Algeria international Anthar Yahia.

The former Real Madrid manager is also said to have asked to bring 11 assistants with him. That request was reportedly considered excessive by the FAF and has further complicated the possibility of an agreement.

No final decision has been made, but Felix Sanchez is currently believed to be the strongest alternative. The Spaniard is available immediately and is viewed as a candidate who fits the federation’s sporting and financial criteria.

Sanchez is considered affordable, has international experience and is familiar with player development. Those qualities have placed him ahead of the other options being assessed, with the Algeria job potentially set to move in his direction if the current trend continues.

The former La Masia coach could take charge of the Fennecs between the end of September and the beginning of October. His first matches would be the opening two fixtures in Algeria’s qualifying campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations, against Zambia and Burundi.

The uncertainty follows the departure of Petkovic and leaves the FAF with an important appointment to make before the next competitive international window. While Benitez was initially viewed as the preferred choice, the disagreement over the structure and size of his proposed staff appears to have changed the picture.

For now, the federation has not confirmed either Benitez’s removal from consideration or Sanchez’s appointment. The Spanish coach’s availability, international background and experience in developing players have nevertheless made him the candidate currently holding the advantage.

The final decision will determine who leads Algeria into the opening stages of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying process. If Sanchez is selected, he could be installed in time to prepare for the fixtures against Zambia and Burundi, while Benitez’s reported demands may bring an end to his brief spell as the leading contender for the post.
