Las Palmas capture Ghana defender Nicolas Opoku on two-year deal

Spanish outfit UD Las Palmas have announced the signing of Ghana international Nicholas Opoku ahead of the new football campaign.

The experienced defender joins the Canary Islands outfit on a two-year deal after ending his spell with Turkish side Kasimpasa following the expiration of his contract.

His arrival strengthens Las Palmas’ defence ahead of the 2026/27 campaign as the club continues to reshape its squad. 

“Nicholas Opoku and UD Las Palmas join paths until June 30, 2028. The central defender, an international with Ghana, arrives at the Gran Canarian team after an extensive career in some of the main European leagues, bringing experience, solidity, and leadership to the defensive line,” wrote the club.

Opoku began his professional career with Berekum Chelsea in Ghana before moving to Tunisian giants Club Africain, where he won the Tunisian Cup during the 2017/18 season. His performances earned him a switch to Italian Serie A side Udinese in 2018, although regular first-team opportunities proved limited.

He later revived his career in France with Amiens SC, spending several seasons with the club in both Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 before joining Kasımpaşa in Turkey. Across his time in Europe, Opoku has built a reputation as a commanding central defender capable of competing at a high level in multiple leagues. 

Opoku developed his skills in Ghana and launched his professional career with Berekum Chelsea. He then moved to Club Africain, securing the Tunisian Cup during the 2017/18 campaign. His strong displays earned him a move to the Italian Serie A with Udinese, followed by a multi-year stint in France with Amiens SC.

Most recently, he competed in the Turkish Super Lig for Kasımpaşa. As a player, Opoku is known for his power, dominant tackling, quick recovery pace, and strong distribution from the back.

The club added: “Nicholas Opoku stands out for his physical strength, assertiveness in duels, speed in tackling, and ability to initiate play from the defensive line.”

Opoku has also represented Ghana at senior international level, earning Black Stars call-ups in recent years and featuring in major international competitions. His move to Las Palmas offers another opportunity to showcase his abilities in one of Europe’s most competitive football environments while strengthening his prospects with the national team.

The transfer marks a new chapter in Opoku’s career as he looks to establish himself in Spanish football and help UD Las Palmas achieve their ambitions during the upcoming season.
