Ronald de Boer backs Tolu Arokodare to become Ajax’s counter-attacking weapon

Ajax legend Ronald de Boer believes Nigerian striker Tolu Arokodare’s pace could become a major asset for the Dutch giants, particularly when they look to exploit opponents on the counter-attack.

Arokodare, who joined Ajax on a season-long loan from Wolverhampton Wanderers after struggling for regular opportunities in England, has already caught attention in Amsterdam following a promising start to life at the club.

The Nigeria international marked his unofficial debut with a goal in Ajax’s 3-1 pre-season victory over FC Volendam, immediately giving supporters a glimpse of the qualities that convinced the Dutch side to bring him in.

Although he was not introduced during Ajax’s UEFA Conference League clash against Irish side Shelbourne FC on Thursday, the striker remained a talking point before kick-off after a moment that impressed former Netherlands international De Boer.

De Boer impressed by striker’s mentality

Ahead of Ajax’s competitive fixture at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, Arokodare was seen standing alone in the centre circle, spending several minutes in prayer before returning to the dressing room.

De Boer, speaking on Ziggo Sports, highlighted the moment as a sign of the striker’s focus and belief ahead of his new challenge in the Netherlands.

“Did you see him before the match? Tolu was standing on the center circle praying, I think for five or ten minutes. He was standing there all alone. Then he went inside. So that will be fine tonight, I think.”

The former Ajax star also believes the Nigerian forward possesses the physical attributes required to thrive in the club’s attacking system.

De Boer singled out Arokodare’s speed as a particularly valuable weapon, suggesting his ability to stretch defences could give Ajax another dimension when transitioning quickly from defence to attack.

“Tolu has speed, so you can also use him on the counter-attack. His technique is pretty good, from what I’ve heard.”

Arokodare looking to revive his career

The move to Ajax represents an opportunity for Arokodare to rebuild momentum after falling down the pecking order at Wolves.

The 25-year-old forward arrived at the English club with a strong reputation following his impressive performances in Belgium but found it difficult to secure a consistent role.

Ajax, searching for attacking reinforcements, moved quickly to secure his services and are hoping his combination of strength, movement and finishing ability can provide a boost to their frontline.

Ajax eventually secured progression momentum with a 3-1 victory over Shelbourne, despite Arokodare watching from the substitutes’ bench.

Mika Godts opened the scoring for the Dutch side before Owen Wijndal and returning striker Kasper Dolberg added further goals to complete a comfortable win.

Shelbourne managed a late consolation through Daniel Kelly, but Ajax maintained control to claim a positive result.
