Penya Deportiva add Mali defender Souleymane Gassama after Salamanca departure
Mali left-back Souleymane Gassama has joined Penya Deportiva from Salamanca CF on a free transfer, giving the Segunda Federacion club a new defensive option ahead of the 2026-27 season.
The 27-year-old, who was born in Bamako, moves between clubs in Spain’s fourth tier after spending the previous four years with Salamanca. He joined Salamanca from Ciudad Real in July 2022, also on a free transfer, and now switches to Penya Deportiva, who compete in Segunda Federacion Group III.
Gassama has made 67 appearances in Segunda Federacion, scoring four goals and providing three assists. He has also played in the Copa del Rey, where he has one goal from four appearances. His career record includes further spells with CD Mostoles, CD Tudelano and CF Fuenlabrada.
The defender began his senior career in Spain with Betis CF after arriving from US Goreenne in 2017. He subsequently moved to Fuenlabrada B before stepping into the senior Fuenlabrada side. His route has included a loan spell with UD Sanse during the 2019-20 season.
Gassama is a left-footed defender whose primary position is left-back. He stands 1.82m tall and adds experience of Spanish lower-league football to Penya Deportiva’s squad. His arrival also represents another move within the Spanish game for a player who has spent his entire recorded senior career at clubs in the country.
The transfer brings an end to Gassama’s time at Salamanca and places him with a Penya Deportiva side competing in a different Segunda Federacion group. The move was completed on 5 August 2026, with Gassama’s contract running until 30 June 2027.
