Chelsea-bound Chavarria set for record Rayo Vallecano departure under Xabi Alonso

Pep Chavarria is set to join Chelsea from Rayo Vallecano in a deal worth €25m, plus bonuses and add-ons, in what will become the biggest sale in the Madrid club’s history.

The official announcement is expected within the next few hours, with the two clubs completing the final details of the transfer, according to Spanish newspaper Sport.

Rayo Vallecano had initially hoped to secure a fee closer to the €50m release clause in Chavarria’s contract. However, negotiations have resulted in an agreement worth approximately half that amount, with the additional payments potentially increasing the overall value of the deal.

The transfer represents the biggest move of Chavarria’s professional career and follows the best season of his career so far. The left-back made 44 appearances in all competitions, scoring once and providing three assists.

His goal came against Atletico de Madrid and was described as an outstanding strike. Those performances helped establish the Spanish defender as one of the leading left-backs in La Liga and attracted interest from several major European clubs.

One of the clubs to monitor his situation was Bayer Leverkusen, but Chavarria ultimately chose a move to Chelsea and the Premier League.

At Stamford Bridge, Chavarria will work under Spanish manager Xabi Alonso. His system is based on using three central defenders alongside attack-minded wing-backs, a structure that is considered well suited to Chavarria’s attacking qualities.

Chavarria has already arrived in the English capital and will fill the gap created by Marc Cucurella’s departure for Real Madrid. His main competition for the left-back position at Chelsea is expected to come from Jorrel Hato.

The move will take Chavarria to one of European football’s biggest clubs after a career that has included spells with Figueres, Olot, Real Zaragoza and Rayo Vallecano.

His time at Rayo Vallecano has now culminated in the club’s record transfer sale, despite the final fee being significantly below the player’s release clause. For Chelsea, the agreement adds a left-sided defender whose strongest campaign to date has attracted attention across Europe and who could fit naturally into Alonso’s preferred tactical approach.
