Mofokeng scores decisive penalty as Royale Union Saint-Gilloise win Belgian Super Cup

Former Orlando Pirates attacking midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng marked his Royale Union Saint-Gilloise debut by scoring the decisive penalty as his new club defeated Belgian champions Club Brugge to lift the Belgian Super Cup.

The 20-year-old came on in the 61st minute with Union Saint-Gilloise trailing 1-0, having completed a move to Europe after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite missing part of pre-season, Mofokeng quickly made an impact in his first appearance for the club.

Club Brugge had taken the lead before Mofokeng was introduced, leaving Royale Union Saint-Gilloise facing an uphill battle in the Super Cup. However, the visitors recovered after Kevin Mac Allister equalised 16 minutes after the South African’s arrival.

The match went to a penalty shootout, where Mofokeng was entrusted with the crucial fifth and final attempt for Union Saint-Gilloise. He held his nerve to convert, completing a perfect set of penalties for his side.

Cheveyo Tsawa was the only player to miss from the spot for Club Brugge, allowing Royale Union Saint-Gilloise to secure victory and give Mofokeng a trophy in his first appearance for the Belgian club.

The triumph provides an ideal start to Mofokeng’s European career after his move from Orlando Pirates. Having only recently arrived following the World Cup, he had limited preparation time with his new team but still played an important role in their success.

His appearance from the bench came when Union Saint-Gilloise needed a response, and the attacking midfielder helped his side turn a deficit into a shootout victory. His composure with the final penalty underlined the confidence placed in him by his new club.
