Durban City close in on Rwanda winger Lague Byiringiro

Durban City are in advanced talks to sign Rwanda international winger Lague Byiringiro as the Nedbank Cup champions seek to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.

Byiringiro, 25, is a free agent after leaving Police FC in Rwanda. Negotiations between the player and Durban City are progressing, with both parties understood to be keen to complete the move.

However, the transfer is not yet finalised. The deal remains dependent on Byiringiro receiving a work permit and passing a medical, meaning the process could take another week.

The winger has previously played for APR FC and also spent time in Sweden with Sandvikens IF. During his spell there, he scored nine goals and provided one assist in 39 appearances.

Byiringiro’s experience of CAF inter-club football is viewed as an important part of his appeal to Durban City. He has also won 14 senior caps for Rwanda, and his background could prove valuable as the club prepares for its first involvement in continental competition this season.

Durban City begin their campaign on Saturday afternoon when they face Sekhukhune United at Seshego Stadium. The match will provide the club with its first competitive test of the season while discussions over Byiringiro’s potential arrival continue.

The South African club are looking to add further attacking quality, with the Rwanda international offering experience both domestically and in international football. His previous record includes time with one of Rwanda’s established clubs, a spell in Sweden and regular exposure to CAF competition.

Despite the advanced nature of the negotiations, there is no confirmation that Byiringiro will be available for Saturday’s fixture. The outstanding work-permit and medical requirements must be completed before the transfer can be concluded.

Durban City’s pursuit of Byiringiro comes as they prepare for a season that combines domestic commitments with a first venture into continental football. The club’s status as Nedbank Cup champions has raised expectations, while the planned addition of a Rwanda international would provide another option in attack.

Talks are expected to continue in the coming days, with the proposed move potentially taking a further week to resolve because of the remaining administrative and medical checks.
