Manchester United v Atletico Madrid: Stockholm friendly puts summer form under scrutiny

Manchester United and Atletico de Madrid meet at Stockholm’s Strawberry Arena on Saturday, 1 August 2026, in a pre-season friendly that will offer an early test of both teams’ preparations for the 2026-27 campaign.

Kick-off is scheduled for 15:00 local time, or 13:00 GMT. Mahamad Sangare, presenter of the sports debate programme La VAR on Burkina info TV, has provided his analysis and prediction for the match.

The fixture will give both sides the opportunity to measure themselves against high-level opposition, although the results must be viewed in the context of pre-season.

Manchester United have already played two preparation matches. They began with a 1-0 defeat by Wrexham before responding with an emphatic 5-0 victory against Rosenborg. The Red Devils therefore arrive with one win and one defeat, having scored five goals and conceded one.

The club are now managed by Michael Carrick, who is using the remaining pre-season matches to develop his team’s understanding and settle on a preferred starting line-up before the Premier League begins.

Atletico de Madrid started their summer programme later than Manchester United. The Spanish side have based much of their work around a training camp at Los Angeles de San Rafael, while several internationals joined the squad gradually after completing duties with their national teams. That has made the preparation process less uniform.

The meeting is also an important step before Atletico face further demanding tests against Manchester City and Marseille.

Manchester United have several fitness concerns ahead of the game. Benjamin Sesko, Matthijs de Ligt, Manuel Ugarte and Lisandro Martinez are among those dealing with physical problems, and their availability remains uncertain.

No major Atletico de Madrid absence has been clearly confirmed at this stage. However, both managers may choose to protect some players or limit their minutes because of the friendly nature of the match and the stage of pre-season.

The clubs have not met in a competitive fixture since the last 16 of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League. Atletico prevailed 2-1 on aggregate after the first leg ended 1-1. The Colchoneros then won 1-0 at Old Trafford in the return match, with Renan Lodi scoring the decisive goal.

Sangare believes the match could produce an open contest, with both teams possessing attacking quality and pre-season substitutions potentially creating additional space.

“This is, in my view, the more cautious choice,” he said.

Manchester United are slight favourites in the betting market, with their victory priced at around 2.20, compared with approximately 3.10 for Atletico de Madrid.

The alternative betting option is regarded as interesting but carries greater risk because of the number of player changes that could be made during the match.
