Algeria boss Hemdani sets clear conditions for Zerrouki and Aouar recalls

Brahim Hemdani has made it clear that Ramiz Zerrouki and Houssem Aouar can still return to the Algeria squad, but neither player is guaranteed a place under the new manager.

The pair were notable absentees from Hemdani’s first squad, named for matches against Zambia and Burundi and a friendly against Niger. Both featured at the 2026 World Cup, which Algeria exited in the round of 32, but the new manager has opted to make significant changes in midfield.

Twelve players who were part of Algeria’s World Cup squad have been left out of the latest selection as Hemdani begins to reshape the team following the retirement of several senior figures.

Zerrouki started during the World Cup but endured a disappointing tournament and appeared particularly vulnerable after the change in management. Aouar has also been omitted as Hemdani looks to establish a different balance in the centre of the pitch.

However, neither player has been ruled out permanently.

Hemdani’s position is that reputations built under former manager Vladimir Petkovic will no longer guarantee selection. Players who perform consistently for their clubs can put themselves back in contention.

“Since the World Cup, many things have happened and several players have retired. That creates an opportunity for the younger players to take control,” said the former midfielder.

The manager’s approach is already reflected in his midfield choices. Adil Aouchiche has been recalled, while Himad Abdelli and Adem Zorgane have also been included, bringing different qualities to an area where the pecking order is expected to change considerably.

The selection of Nabil Bentaleb is another significant decision. The 31-year-old had been expected by some to miss out alongside Zerrouki, but he has been named in the 26-man squad.

Yacine Titraoui’s injury, which rules him out of this international window, may have influenced that decision, although Hemdani has not publicly linked the two cases.

The new manager also indicated that his assessment of Algeria’s internationals will not be based solely on their performances on the pitch. That offers an early indication of the standards and principles he intends to apply.

For Zerrouki and Aouar, the opportunity to return remains open. But Hemdani’s first squad demonstrates that the hierarchy established during the World Cup will not simply be carried forward.

Both players will now have to convince the new manager that they deserve to regain their places with the Fennecs.
