Morocco face Algeria in high-stakes Women’s AFCON group clash in Rabat

Morocco and Algeria meet in Rabat on Thursday night in a pivotal 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations Group A fixture, with the winners guaranteed to secure the first quarter-final place from the pool.

Just four days after both sides opened their campaigns with convincing victories, they return to the Stade Moulay El Hassan for what already feels like a decisive contest on matchday two. Algeria beat Senegal 2-0 on 26 July, before hosts Morocco underlined their credentials with a 4-0 win over Kenya.

The stakes are clear: the team that prevails will book its ticket for the last eight with a game to spare. The losers will be left to fight for qualification on the third and final day of group action.

Historic rivals meet after controversy

This encounter is the first meeting between the two national teams since tensions flared around Algeria’s participation at a previous tournament. The Algerian delegation was accused last year of avoiding any mention of Morocco during the competition, amid talk of a possible boycott.

On the pitch, their last clash dates back to qualifying for the 2020 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Morocco won that tie 2-0, but the tournament itself was later cancelled because of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Since then, both teams have evolved, with Morocco emerging as one of the continent’s leading women’s sides and Algeria looking to re-establish themselves on the regional stage.

Vilda keeps faith with attacking line-up

Morocco coach Jorge Vilda has opted for continuity, naming the same starting XI that dismantled Kenya in their opening match.

Sakina Ouzraoui and Maryem Atiq, who were both on the scoresheet in that 4-0 victory, retain their places in attack. Ibtissam Jraidi, who struck twice against the East Africans, also starts again as the focal point of the forward line.

Despite the strong attacking display in the first game, captain Ghizlane Chebbak begins once more on the bench, with Vilda choosing not to alter the balance of a side that impressed in its first outing.

Algeria make one change after Senegal win

Opposite number Farid Benstiti has resisted the temptation to tinker, making just one alteration to the Algeria team that overcame Senegal.

Morgane Ikene comes into the starting line-up in place of Morgane Belkhiter, representing a single change from the side that delivered a controlled 2-0 win in their opener.

Marine Dafeur and Melissa Bethi, who both scored against Senegal, keep their places and will again carry much of Algeria’s attacking threat as they look to upset the hosts and seize control of Group A.

With both nations having three points from three and strong goal differences after their first matches, Thursday’s meeting is expected to go a long way towards determining the final Group A standings.
