WAFCON 2026: Nigeria federation slams ‘unacceptable’ racist abuse aimed at Esther Okoronkwo after Malawi defeat

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has condemned racist abuse directed at Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo on social media following an incident involving the team at their hotel in Casablanca, Morocco.

Okoronkwo became the target of offensive comments and racist emojis online after reports emerged of a theft at the Super Falcons’ Marriott Hotel. The incident reportedly involved the disappearance of cash, with a suspect subsequently arrested by Moroccan authorities.

The NFF has now moved to defend the forward, insisting that the abuse directed at her is completely unjustified, particularly because the theft was resolved through the proper legal process.

According to the federation, the stolen money was fully recovered after the suspect was apprehended. The individual responsible was also sentenced to six months in prison, bringing the matter before the authorities to a conclusion.

Despite the resolution of the incident, Okoronkwo faced a wave of racist insults and offensive messages on social media.

The NFF has strongly rejected the abuse, describing the treatment of the Super Falcons forward as unacceptable and reiterating its support for the player.

In a statement, the Nigerian football governing body expressed its disappointment over the online attacks and questioned the rationale behind targeting Okoronkwo following the hotel incident.

“The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) strongly condemns the unacceptable racist abuse directed at Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo on social media following recent incidents at the team’s hotel in Morocco.

“The racist abuse and emojis directed at our player make absolutely no sense, especially as the individual responsible for the theft was apprehended, made to return the stolen cash in full, and sentenced to six months in prison.”

The federation’s comments come as the Super Falcons continue their campaign in Morocco, where the team is competing at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The NFF’s intervention highlights the seriousness with which it views the abuse directed at one of its key players, particularly after the matter that triggered the backlash had already been handled by the authorities.

Theft case ends with conviction

The hotel incident became a talking point after reports of missing cash from the Super Falcons’ accommodation in Casablanca.

Authorities moved quickly to investigate the matter, leading to the arrest of a suspect. The NFF says the stolen money was subsequently recovered in full, while the suspect was handed a six-month prison sentence.
