Casric Stars spark rebrand speculation after teasing ‘new chapter’ on social media

Casric Stars have fuelled growing speculation about a major rebrand after the Motsepe Foundation Championship club teased a “new chapter” on their official platforms but stopped short of confirming a change of name or logo.

The Mpumalanga side, who earned national attention last season with a giant‐killing run in the Nedbank Cup and narrowly missed out on a promotion play-off spot, posted a short video on Tuesday carrying the tagline: “Every Great Journey Reaches A New Chapter” followed by “Something Extra Ordinary Is Coming”.

The timing of the teaser, so close to the start of the new campaign, has prompted widespread talk in the province that the Premier Soccer League outfit could be preparing to unveil a new identity ahead of the 2024-25 season.

However, club boss and head coach Bucs Mthombeni, who is a part-owner of Casric, declined to confirm suggestions that a name change is imminent when contacted.

“[Laughing] No, I can’t confirm that,” Mthombeni told KickOff when asked directly whether the teaser relates to a new club name.

Brand changes ‘in the pipeline’

While refusing to go into detail, Mthombeni did acknowledge that Casric are working on a series of brand-related announcements.

“It’s just some few things coming our way that had to do with our brand. There’s going to be quite a number of activities. It’s not one thing that we’re going to announce, it’s a few things in the pipeline.

“Let’s just be patient a little bit,” he added, offering no further clarification on the scope or timing of the planned changes.

The club has not released any official statement outlining the nature of the “new chapter”, and there has been no regulatory communication from the Premier Soccer League indicating that Casric have applied to alter their registered name or emblem.

From FC Palmeiras to Casric Stars

Casric are no strangers to reinvention. The club previously competed as FC Palmeiras before adopting the Casric Stars name, which combines the first names of founders Caswell Mkansi and Eric Mathebula.

After the rebrand, Casric went on to purchase the status of Free State Stars, consolidating their position within South Africa’s professional league structure and relocating the project to Mpumalanga.

Their most notable achievement to date came in last season’s Nedbank Cup, where they built a reputation as cup specialists and established themselves as one of the stories of the competition.

Nedbank Cup ‘giant-killers’

Casric stunned many observers by eliminating one of the Soweto giants, Pirates, in the Round of 16, a result that underlined their capacity to compete with top-flight opposition despite operating outside the top tier.

They followed that up by knocking out AmaZulu FC in the quarter-finals, extending a memorable run that took them to the brink of their first major cup final.

Their journey ended in heartbreaking fashion at the semi-final stage, where they suffered a narrow defeat to Durban City FC after conceding an own goal that proved decisive.

Near miss in promotion race

Alongside their cup exploits, Casric were also in contention for a place in the Motsepe Foundation Championship promotion play-offs last season, only to fall just short in the closing stages of the league campaign.

That combination of on-pitch progress and off-pitch evolution has helped to raise the club’s profile, adding extra intrigue to any potential shift in identity now being hinted at.

For now, though, supporters and observers will have to wait for further clarity, with Casric insisting that multiple announcements are planned but offering no confirmation that a new name or logo is among them.
