Johan Bakayoko could leave RB Leipzig in the January transfer window, with the German club reportedly prepared to consider both a permanent transfer and a loan move.
The Belgium international joined RB Leipzig from PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 2025, but has struggled to secure a regular place in the team. According to Sky Sport, the club is now willing to listen to offers for the 23-year-old winger.
Bakayoko signed a contract running until 2030 after RB Leipzig agreed to pay PSV Eindhoven 18 million euros for his transfer, with a further 4 million euros potentially due in bonuses.
However, the Belgium international has not established himself under either of the coaches he has worked with since arriving in Germany. He failed to become a regular starter under Ole Werner last season and has also been unable to convince Martin Demichelis, who succeeded him.
Loan move considered more likely
RB Leipzig are understood to value Bakayoko at between 11 and 12 million euros, or potentially more, for a permanent transfer.
A loan is considered the more realistic option for the winter window. Such a move would give Bakayoko the opportunity to play more regularly elsewhere, while allowing RB Leipzig to reassess his position in the coming months.
His salary could also have an influence on negotiations. Bakayoko’s fixed pay is in the lower end of the eight-figure range, meaning it is slightly above 10 million euros. Performance-related bonuses could increase that amount.
His restricted role last season meant he missed out on a substantial bonus.
The winger’s statistics have so far fallen short of the expectations attached to his arrival. In 26 official appearances for RB Leipzig, the left-footed player has scored three goals.
His involvement has reduced further this season. Bakayoko has played in only four matches in the Bundesliga and the German Cup, accumulating 149 minutes on the pitch.
That lack of playing time has increased the possibility of a January departure. Bakayoko will now be looking for a club where he can rebuild his confidence, play regularly and revive a career that had developed strongly during his time at PSV Eindhoven.
RB Leipzig are due to face Manchester City in their fourth match of the league phase of the Champions League.
