Manga Foe Ondoa is emerging as one of the most closely watched young players at Monza, with France monitoring the 20-year-old’s progress and Cameroon also able to compete for his international allegiance.
The midfielder has made a rapid rise into Monza’s first-team plans this season, earning the confidence of his manager and establishing himself in the starting line-up.
Born in 2005, Foe Ondoa has already made nine appearances across Serie A and Coppa Italia. His performances have earned attention beyond Italy, with his maturity and regular playing time standing out for a player of his age.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, France’s youth international staff are following him closely and could consider including him in their plans for upcoming matches.
Eligible for France and Cameroon
Foe Ondoa was born in France and also holds Cameroonian nationality, meaning he could represent either country internationally, subject to FIFA eligibility rules.
France’s interest could provide the next major step in the midfielder’s development. Cameroon, meanwhile, are likely to view him as a prospect worth monitoring because of his progress in Italy, his increasing involvement at club level and his ability to establish himself in a demanding league.
The player will ultimately have to decide whether to represent France or Cameroon. France appear to have made the first move by tracking his performances, while Cameroon could draw on his connection to his family origins.
Foe Ondoa’s recent career makes his progress particularly notable. Last season, he was playing in Portugal’s second division for Oliveirense after joining from Estoril. Estoril had identified his potential two years earlier, when they signed him from Valenciennes.
Monza subsequently paid 1.5 million euros to secure his services. That investment is already appearing to have been rewarded, with Foe Ondoa taking an important step forward and finding a position where his qualities can be used effectively.
Within a matter of months, he has moved from being a relatively little-known prospect to a player Monza appear ready to rely on. His development could soon lead to his first senior international opportunity, although neither France nor Cameroon has yet secured his commitment.
Monza will soon play their 11th league match of the season against Atalanta. The fixture will take place as attention continues to grow around Foe Ondoa, whose improving standing in Italy could make his international decision an important issue for both the France and Cameroon set-ups.
