Mathis Amanu Philippe: Franco-Ethiopian right-back joins APEA Akrotiri on free transfer

Franco-Ethiopian defender Mathis Amanu Philippe has joined Cypriot club APEA Akrotiri on a free transfer from Verona U20. The 20-year-old right-back has signed a deal running until 31 May 2027 with the 2. Division side.

Philippe moves to Cyprus after two seasons in Italy’s Primavera 1 with Verona’s U20 squad, having previously developed in France with FC Nantes. He will be registered as a defender for APEA Akrotiri, operating primarily at right-back and favouring his right foot.

Born in Gewada in 2005, Philippe holds both French and Ethiopian nationality and stands at 1.75m. He first came to prominence in France’s youth system, making his name with Nantes’ academy sides before earning a switch to Verona’s set-up in August 2024.

During his time in France, Philippe was part of the FC Nantes U19 team that won the French U19 championship in the 2022-23 season. Across youth competitions including the National U19 league, UEFA Youth League and domestic cups, he amassed more than 80 appearances, contributing goals and assists from defence.

His record at U19 level for Nantes included regular game time and four goals, while he also featured in European youth competition, providing two assists in the UEFA Youth League. That exposure to high-level youth football in both France and Italy forms the backdrop to his first move into senior football in Cyprus.

Philippe’s transfer from Verona U20 to APEA Akrotiri on a free transfer was completed on 24 July 2026.
