Fulham in talks with Real Madrid over Gonzalo Garcia move as Arbeloa targets first signing

Fulham have opened negotiations with Real Madrid to sign Spanish striker Gonzalo Garcia, in a deal that would reunite the 22-year-old with his former coach Alvaro Arbeloa in west London.

The Premier League club are in advanced discussions over a summer transfer for the forward, according to The Athletic, with Arbeloa personally involved in efforts to convince Garcia to swap the Bernabeu for Craven Cottage.

If completed, Garcia would become Fulham’s first signing of the current transfer window as the club look to reshape their attack ahead of the new season.

Arbeloa pushes for reunion in London

Arbeloa, who left his role at Real Madrid to take charge of Fulham earlier this month, is described in the report as one of the key figures behind Garcia’s rise in Spain and is now playing a direct role in talks.

The former Real Madrid full-back is said to be working closely with Fulham’s hierarchy to secure the move, making a personal pitch to the player about the advantages of regular football in the Premier League.

The Spanish coach stepped into the Fulham job following his departure from Madrid this summer, and Garcia could be the first significant addition of his tenure.

Real Madrid to retain future control

Any agreement is expected to include clauses that allow Real Madrid to maintain a degree of influence over Garcia’s long-term future.

The report states that the Spanish giants want to preserve certain rights in the final deal, such as a buy-back option or mechanisms that enable them to control or participate in any future move.

Madrid had initially decided several months ago that Garcia would leave this summer, but the arrival of Jose Mourinho as head coach delayed a final decision.

He enjoyed a standout spell during Real Madrid’s FIFA Club World Cup campaign last summer, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer with four goals. That form earned him a new contract running until the summer of 2030.

Last season, Garcia scored eight goals in 39 matches but started only nine La Liga games, with Real Madrid building their attack primarily around Kylian Mbappe as their first-choice centre-forward.

On the fringes of Spain’s national team

Garcia has made one senior international appearance for Spain, coming off the bench in a friendly against Iraq in June.

He was subsequently left out of Luis de la Fuente’s squad for the 2026 World Cup, underlining the importance of securing more regular club minutes if he is to push for a more prominent role with the national team.
