Efstathiou says ABC Motsepe League grant has remained at R30 000 for 30 years

Cape Town Spurs chief executive Alexi Efstathiou says the ABC Motsepe League remains in need of major reform, claiming its annual grant is still only R30 000 – the same amount it provided 30 years ago.

The ABC Motsepe League is South Africa’s third tier and is administered by the South African Football Association. The amateur competition has faced long-standing concerns over corruption, misconduct, greed and manipulation.

Efstathiou was previously involved in the league three decades ago and believes little has changed since then. Cape Town Spurs are currently competing in the Western Cape ABC Motsepe League after being relegated from the Motsepe Foundation Championship last season.

“Seriously there are things that need fixing in the ABC Motsepe League, the grant it’s still the same like it was 30 years ago, it’s R30 000 a year,” Efstathiou told KickOff.

“Tell me what can you do with R30 000 a year? It hardly covers anything. Hence I say nothing has changed. It’s a real struggle. The league still needs some fixing.”
