Spike Brits: Sutton United sign England-South Africa goalkeeper on loan from Man City U21
Sutton United have signed England-South Africa goalkeeper Spike Brits on loan from Manchester City’s Under-21 side. The 19-year-old, who was born in Wimbledon and represents both England and South Africa at youth level, joins the National League club for the 2026-27 campaign.
Brits, a right-footed goalkeeper, moves to Gander Green Lane having come through the academy system at Manchester City, where he progressed from the Under-18s to the Under-21s. His loan to Sutton United runs until the end of May 2027, when he is scheduled to return to City’s development squad.
The teenager has already built up an eye-catching record in youth football. He was part of the Manchester City U21 side that won the U21 Premier League title in the 2024-25 season, adding to an English FA Youth Cup triumph with City’s U18s in 2023-24. Those honours followed his move to City’s academy from Wimbledon’s youth ranks in 2023.
Brits initially joined Manchester City’s Under-18s from Wimbledon’s youth set-up in a deal worth €230,000 before stepping up to the U21 squad in 2024. His switch to Sutton United marks his first loan spell away from City and his first experience of senior men’s football in the National League.
The move sees Brits become Sutton United’s latest addition ahead of the new season, with the goalkeeper registered on a season-long loan from Manchester City U21.
