Jean-Michaël Seri retires from international football

Ivory Coast midfielder Jean-Michaël Seri has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a remarkable 11-year journey with the Elephants that saw him become one of the country’s most respected midfielders of his generation.

The 34-year-old confirmed his decision through an emotional message shared on his official Instagram account, drawing the curtain on a national team career filled with memorable moments, major tournaments and the pride of representing Ivory Coast on the biggest stages.

Seri made his debut for the Elephants more than a decade ago and went on to establish himself as an important figure in the national team setup. Over the years, he earned the trust of several coaches and became known for his technical ability, composure in possession and intelligence in controlling the rhythm of matches.

During his international career, the experienced midfielder represented Ivory Coast at five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, achieving one of the biggest honours in African football by winning the continental title with the Elephants.

He was also part of the Ivory Coast squad that featured at the FIFA World Cup, further highlighting the level of his contribution to the national team over an extended period.

Seri’s international journey coincided with a period of transition for Ivory Coast football, as the Elephants continued to rebuild following the golden generation that won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015. His consistency and professionalism made him a valuable presence in midfield, offering both defensive discipline and creativity.

In his farewell statement, Seri expressed gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his time with the national team, including his teammates, coaches, federation officials and Ivory Coast supporters.

The former Fulham and Nice midfielder described wearing the national colours as both an honour and a responsibility, insisting that he always represented his country with pride and commitment.

“Glory to God. After 11 years with the national team, five Africa Cup of Nations tournaments—including one title—and a FIFA World Cup appearance, I am announcing today the end of my international career.

Representing Côte d’Ivoire has been both an honor and a responsibility, one that I have always carried with pride.

I would like to thank my teammates, the coaching and support staff, the Football Federation, and all Ivorians who love and understand football for their trust and unwavering support.

Now, it is time to focus on the next chapter of my club career with the same determination. Thank you for everything.”

Seri’s retirement marks the end of an era for one of Ivory Coast’s most technically gifted midfielders. His ability to dictate play, break lines with his passing and maintain control under pressure made him a key figure throughout his career.

At club level, Seri has enjoyed an impressive journey, representing teams across Europe and gaining valuable experience in France and England. His performances at OGC Nice earned him international recognition before he moved to the Premier League with Fulham FC.

Despite ending his international career, Seri has made it clear that he remains fully focused on continuing his club career and contributing at the highest level.

His departure leaves behind a legacy of dedication, professionalism and service to the Elephants, with Ivory Coast losing a player who played a significant role in the country’s football story over the past decade.

As he begins the next chapter of his career away from international duty, Seri will be remembered as one of the outstanding midfielders of Ivory Coast’s modern football era.
