Algeria defender Aissa Mandi joins Levante

Algerian international defender Aissa Mandi has returned to Spanish football after completing a move to Levante, signing a contract that will keep him at the club until June 2028.

The experienced centre-back becomes one of Levante’s latest additions as the club strengthens its squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, with the Spanish side looking to benefit from the leadership and defensive qualities of a player with extensive experience at both club and international level.

Mandi arrives as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with French club Lille, where he spent the final stage of his recent European journey. After leaving France, the 34-year-old opted for a return to La Liga, a competition where he has already established himself as a proven and respected defender.

The Algerian international has signed a two-year contract with Levante, committing his future to the Spanish club until June 2028. The agreement gives him the opportunity to continue competing at a high level while bringing valuable experience to a squad aiming to achieve its objectives.

Mandi joins Levante after representing Algeria at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he was part of the Fennecs squad on the global stage. His international experience and leadership qualities are expected to be important assets for both club and country moving forward.

The defender has been a key figure for Algeria for more than a decade, earning numerous caps and becoming one of the most reliable members of the national team. His calmness, reading of the game and ability to organise the defence have made him an important presence for the Fennecs.

His return to Spain also marks a reunion with a league where he enjoyed some of the best moments of his club career.

Mandi previously spent several successful seasons with Real Betis, where he developed into one of La Liga’s most consistent defenders. His performances in Seville earned him widespread recognition and eventually led to a move to another Spanish top-flight side, Villarreal CF.

During his time at Villarreal, Mandi gained further experience competing in domestic competitions and European football, including UEFA competitions, before later moving to France.

Now back in Spain, the veteran defender will be hoping to use his experience to help Levante both defensively and within the dressing room. His arrival is expected to provide stability and leadership, particularly for younger players looking to develop alongside an established international figure.

Known for his positioning, aerial ability and composure under pressure, Mandi has built a reputation as a dependable defender capable of performing consistently at the highest level.

For Levante, signing a player with Mandi’s profile represents a major boost. The club believes his knowledge of Spanish football, international pedigree and experience in top European leagues will be crucial as they prepare for the challenges ahead.

For Mandi, the move offers the chance to continue his career in familiar surroundings and write another chapter in Spain, a country where he has already enjoyed considerable success.

After more than a decade representing Algeria and competing across Europe’s major leagues, the veteran centre-back now begins a new challenge with Levante, aiming to prove that he still has plenty to offer at the highest level.
