Inter face Liverpool, Newcastle battle for Spurs outcast Djed Spence
Inter Milan have entered the race to sign Tottenham Hotspur defender Djed Spence, but their pursuit of the England international is set to face strong competition from Premier League clubs Liverpool and Newcastle United.
The Serie A giants have identified Spence as a potential solution to their right-back vacancy following the departure of Denzel Dumfries to Real Madrid. However, Inter’s attempts to secure the versatile defender’s signature could be complicated by growing interest from clubs in England.
According to TEAMtalk, via CalcioMercato.it, Inter have already made contact with Spence’s representatives as they look to convince the 25-year-old to move to Italy and become part of Cristian Chivu’s plans.
Spence is reportedly open to the possibility of joining Inter, despite remaining under contract with Tottenham until 2029. The defender, however, does not appear to be part of manager Roberto De Zerbi’s long-term plans, opening the door for a potential exit this summer.
Liverpool and Newcastle add pressure to Inter’s pursuit
Inter’s interest comes at a time when several Premier League clubs are monitoring Spence’s situation. Liverpool, Newcastle United and Everton have all been linked with the full-back, giving Tottenham significant leverage in negotiations.
The competition from England could make it difficult for Inter to complete a deal, especially with Spurs believed to be demanding a fee in the region of €35-40 million for the former Genoa player.
Spence’s ability to operate in multiple positions is one of the qualities attracting Inter. His pace, physicality and versatility make him an appealing option for Chivu as the Italian club searches for a long-term replacement on the right side of defence.
Inter forced to rethink transfer strategy after setbacks
The pursuit of Spence comes after Inter suffered setbacks in their efforts to strengthen the position. The Nerazzurri have already had to adjust their transfer plans after missing out on other targets.
Inter were beaten by Chelsea in the race to sign Marco Palestra, while a proposed move for Anan Khalaili collapsed after CONI refused to grant the player sporting eligibility, despite negotiations being at an advanced stage.
Those failed attempts have increased the urgency for Inter to secure a suitable replacement for Dumfries, who completed his move to Real Madrid and left a significant gap in Chivu’s squad.
Spence has now emerged as one of the leading candidates, but Inter will need to overcome both financial and competitive obstacles to land the defender.
