Chelsea enter race to hijack Man United’s move for €50m-rated Manu Kone
Chelsea have emerged as surprise contenders for the signing of Roma and France midfielder Manu Kone, threatening to derail Manchester United’s plans to bring the highly-rated midfielder to Old Trafford.
The Blues have reportedly made their interest known to the Serie A club during discussions over a possible transfer for Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, with Chelsea using the negotiations as an opportunity to enquire about Kone’s availability.
According to Italian publication Corriere della Sera, Chelsea informed Roma of their desire to sign the 25-year-old midfielder as talks over Garnacho’s potential move to the Italian capital progressed.
The development places Chelsea directly in competition with Manchester United, who have been strongly linked with Kone as part of Michael Carrick’s plans to reshape his midfield options.
Man United view Kone as midfield solution
Kone has become one of the most sought-after midfielders in Europe following his impressive performances for France at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Roma star was among France’s standout performers during their run to the semi-finals, where they were eventually eliminated by Spain. His energy, ball-carrying ability and defensive contributions strengthened his reputation on the international stage.
Manchester United have identified Kone as a key target as Carrick looks to build a more balanced midfield. The Red Devils have already strengthened the department with the additions of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans but remain keen to add another dynamic presence.
Kone’s ability to operate in multiple midfield roles has made him an attractive option, with United believing he could provide the physicality and technical quality required for their rebuild.
Roma open to €50 million deal
Despite wanting to keep hold of the French international, Roma’s financial situation could force them into negotiations.
The Serie A club are required to raise funds to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations and are understood to be willing to listen to offers for some of their key players.
Reports indicate that a bid in the region of €50 million could be enough to convince Roma to sanction Kone’s departure this summer.
Chelsea’s late involvement could complicate Manchester United’s pursuit, with the London club having a history of competing aggressively for emerging talents across Europe.
The Blues have been monitoring midfield options as they continue to strengthen their squad, and Kone’s performances at both club and international level have placed him firmly on their radar.
