Kalidou Koulibaly ready for France clash

Senegal captain Kalidou Koulibaly has issued an emotional rallying cry for unity and accountability following the Teranga Lions’ disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, urging everyone involved in the country’s football to put aside personal differences and work towards rebuilding the national team.

The veteran defender did not hide his frustration after Senegal’s elimination, warning that the country’s football was at a critical crossroads and that continued internal divisions could undo years of progress.

“Do we really have to embarrass ourselves like this on the world stage?” Koulibaly said in a passionate social media post.

The Al Hilal centre-back called for an end to the conflicts that he believes have hampered the national team’s development.

“Let’s put an end to these ego battles that only divide us. We must not waste years of hard work, sacrifice, and progress,” he said.

Koulibaly stressed that difficult decisions must now be taken in the best interest of Senegalese football, insisting that the focus should be on safeguarding the future of the next generation of players.

“Let’s come to our senses and make the right decisions for the good of Senegalese football. Let’s do it so our younger generation can continue inspiring an entire nation,” he added.

The former Chelsea and Napoli defender also accepted that responsibility for the World Cup disappointment should be shared rather than placed on a single individual.

“There are many people at fault. Everyone must take responsibility with honesty and humility,” Koulibaly stated.

He warned that the consequences of Senegal’s struggles extended beyond football, saying the country’s reputation had also suffered on the global stage.

“Because today, it’s not just our football that’s suffering, but it’s Senegal’s image as well. If we continue down this path, we won’t move our football forward… we’ll only set it back.”

Despite the disappointment, Koulibaly ended his message on a hopeful note, expressing confidence that the Teranga Lions would recover from the setback.

“A lion may fall… but a lion always rises again.”

The captain’s comments come amid major changes within the national team setup. Following Senegal’s underwhelming World Cup campaign, the Senegalese Football Federation has dismissed head coach Pape Thiaw and his entire technical team.

The decision marks the beginning of what is expected to be a significant rebuilding process as the federation looks to restore confidence and prepare the Teranga Lions for upcoming international competitions.

With Koulibaly calling for unity, accountability and decisive leadership, attention will now turn to the federation’s search for a new head coach and the direction Senegalese football takes in the aftermath of one of its most disappointing World Cup campaigns in recent years.
