Pule Mmodi extends Kaizer Chiefs stay

Kaizer Chiefs have decided to retain the services of attacking midfielder Pule Mmodi after activating an option in his contract to extend his stay at the club for another season.

The former Lamontville Golden Arrows FC midfielder’s initial three-year deal with Amakhosi was set to expire at the end of last month, but the club moved quickly to secure his future as part of their plans for the upcoming campaign.

Chiefs had the option to renew Mmodi’s contract, and the club’s decision to exercise that clause means the experienced attacker will remain at Naturena for another season as the team continues its rebuilding process under new head coach Fernando da Cruz.

The 32-year-old joined Kaizer Chiefs three seasons ago after making a name for himself at Golden Arrows, where his performances earned him recognition as one of the most creative attacking players in South African football.

Since arriving at Chiefs, Mmodi has provided experience, versatility and attacking quality, while also adapting his game to meet the tactical demands of different coaches.

During his time at the club, Mmodi’s role has evolved significantly. He has previously admitted that former Chiefs coach Nasreddine Nabi encouraged him to add more defensive responsibility to his game rather than focusing only on attacking contributions.

The change in his playing approach saw him become a more complete midfielder, contributing both in possession and when the team was without the ball.

His willingness to adapt has been viewed positively by the club, especially as modern football increasingly demands attackers who can contribute defensively and maintain tactical discipline.

Retaining Mmodi could also prove beneficial for new coach Fernando da Cruz, who is looking to build a competitive squad capable of returning Kaizer Chiefs to their former heights.

The French tactician is expected to rely on a combination of experienced players and emerging talents as he shapes his team, and Mmodi’s familiarity with the club environment could provide valuable stability.

Chiefs’ decision to keep the midfielder also comes after the club parted ways with George Matlou, leaving a need for additional depth in the central attacking midfield role.

With limited options available in that position, Mmodi’s continued presence gives Da Cruz another experienced player who can operate between midfield and attack, create opportunities and provide leadership within the squad.

The extension highlights Chiefs’ approach of maintaining continuity while making strategic changes to the team. Rather than allowing another experienced player to leave, the club believes Mmodi still has an important role to play in their ambitions for the new season.

For Mmodi, the contract extension offers another opportunity to make a greater impact at one of Africa’s biggest clubs. After adapting his game and gaining valuable experience at Chiefs, he will now look to repay the club’s faith and help Amakhosi achieve improved results in the campaign ahead.
