Victor Igbonefo: Barito Putera linked with move for Indonesia-Nigeria veteran free agent defender

Indonesia-Nigeria centre-back Victor Igbonefo, currently a free agent after leaving Persib Bandung, is being linked with a move to Indonesian club Barito Putera from his present status of Without Club.

The 40-year-old defender, born in Enugu on 10 October 1985, is listed as unattached following the expiry of his deal at Persib and subsequent registration as a free agent on 1 July 2025. Transfermarkt data on 5 July 2026 records fresh speculation of a switch to Barito Putera, who compete in Indonesias Liga 2, with the probability of the move marked as ? and no fee involved.

Igbonefo, a right-footed centre-back standing 1.83m, holds both Indonesian and Nigerian nationality. His market value on Transfermarkt has steadily declined in recent years and is now recorded as 0 following his departure from Persib, underlining that any transfer to Barito Putera would be on a free-transfer basis.

The defenders last competitive club football came with Persib Bandung, where his value had dropped from a peak of 200,000 in his early 30s to 10,000 by mid-2024 and remained at that level into 2025 before being reset to zero once he became Without Club in September 2025. No current season appearance statistics are listed in the latest dataset, and no recent competitive match including opponent, date, scoreline or detailed performance is recorded for him in this period.

Igbonefos career has taken in lengthy spells in both Indonesia and Thailand, including Persipura Jayapura, Pelita Jaya, Arema FC and multiple periods at Persib in Indonesia, as well as Singha Chiangrai United, Navy FC, Nakhonratchasima Mazda FC and PTT Rayong in Thailand.

If Barito Putera pursue the rumoured deal, the move would offer the veteran a chance to extend a two-decade career in Southeast Asia and further cement his profile as one of the regions most travelled central defenders.
