World Cup 2026: Ghana qualify for the Round of 32

Ghana have officially secured their place in the Round of 32 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup following an impressive campaign that included victory over Panama and a hard-fought draw against England. The Black Stars head into their final Group L fixture against Croatia with qualification already guaranteed and an opportunity to finish either first or second in the group.

Who could Ghana face in the Round of 32?

The answer depends entirely on where Carlos Queiroz’s side finish in Group L.

If Ghana finish second in Group L

The most likely scenario sees Ghana face the runners-up from Group K in Toronto on July 2. Playing in Toronto will mean star midfielder Thomas Partey will not travel with the squad due to his rejection by Canadian immigration authorities. Group K has been dominated by Portugal, leaving either Colombia or DR Congo as the potential opponents for the Black Stars.

Possible Round of 32 opponents:

  • Colombia
  • DR Congo

A meeting with Colombia would present a major tactical challenge against one of South America’s most technically gifted sides, while a clash with DR Congo would produce an all-African knockout encounter filled with familiarity and intensity.

If Ghana win Group L

Should Ghana defeat Croatia and England fail to beat Panama, the Black Stars could remarkably top the group. In that case, they would face one of the best third-placed teams emerging from Groups E, H, I, J or K.

The list of possible opponents currently includes:

  • Sweden (Group F)
  • Algeria (Group J)
  • Austria (Group J)
  • DR Congo (Group K)
  • Potentially another team depending on final results elsewhere.

On paper, winning the group could provide a more favourable route into the knockout stages, although the expanded 48-team format has made predictions far more complicated than in previous tournaments.

Ghana dreaming of another historic run

The Black Stars famously reached the quarter-finals in 2010 and remain the only African nation to have come within a penalty kick of reaching the last four of a FIFA World Cup. With Benjamin Asare in inspired form and the team yet to concede in the tournament, belief is growing that Ghana can once again make a deep run on the global stage.

Everything now hinges on the showdown with Croatia in Philadelphia, a match that will determine whether Ghana enter the Round of 32 as group winners or runners-up, and ultimately who stands in their way next.
