Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi says the Atlas Lions are proud of their progress at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing qualification to the Round of 32 with victory over Haiti.

The North Africans booked their place in the knockout stages following another impressive performance, but Hakimi admitted the game proved far more difficult than many expected.

Morocco struggled to settle into the match during the opening stages as Haiti pressed aggressively and caused several problems with their quick attacking transitions and fearless approach.

Despite the early difficulties, the Atlas Lions gradually regained control of the contest and used their experience, composure, and strong mentality to turn the game around before eventually securing an important victory.

Speaking after the match, Hakimi praised the character shown by the team and highlighted the mentality within the squad as a key factor behind their success.

“It was a tricky and difficult match for us,” Hakimi said. “We didn’t start well, but we used our mentality to turn the game around. We are proud of our journey, but we will prepare well because the next match will be difficult.”

The Paris Saint-Germain defender acknowledged that Morocco had to remain patient during difficult moments of the game, especially with Haiti playing with confidence and intensity.

However, Morocco’s quality eventually became evident as the team improved their movement in possession and became more dangerous in attack. Their calmness under pressure and ability to stay organised helped them take control when it mattered most.

Since their historic run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, Morocco have continued to grow into one of the strongest national teams in world football. Their resilience, tactical discipline, and confidence against top opposition have earned admiration across the football world.

The Atlas Lions have once again demonstrated those qualities throughout the current tournament, balancing defensive solidity with attacking creativity during the group stage.

Hakimi has been one of the standout leaders in the squad, using his experience at the highest level of European football to guide the team during difficult moments.

Beyond his performances on the pitch, the Moroccan captain has also become one of the emotional leaders of the dressing room, helping maintain focus and belief as the pressure of the World Cup intensifies.

Despite the celebrations surrounding qualification, Hakimi insisted Morocco cannot afford to lose concentration as the competition enters its decisive phase.

The defender warned that the next challenge will be even tougher as Morocco prepare for the knockout rounds against stronger opposition.

His comments underline the growing maturity within the Moroccan squad, with the players determined to remain focused rather than becoming distracted by praise and expectations.

Morocco’s qualification to the Round of 32 has also strengthened hopes of another deep run for an African nation at the World Cup, with supporters across the continent rallying behind the Atlas Lions.

With confidence growing inside the camp and experienced stars leading the way, Morocco will head into the knockout stage believing they can compete with any team remaining in the tournament.
