Gideon Mensah eager to overcome Bundesliga fears with Koln

Ghana international Gideon Mensah is relishing the challenge of proving himself in the Bundesliga after completing his move to Koln.

Mensah joined the German club on a two-year contract following the expiry of his deal with French side Auxerre, where he spent four seasons.

The 28-year-old left-back admits the reputation of the Bundesliga presents a significant challenge, but he is determined to overcome any concerns and establish himself at the highest level.

“[I’m looking forward] to getting over my fears [in the Bundesliga]. I mean, coming here, everybody’s saying that, ‘Oh, it’s a difficult league, it’s a high league.’ Obviously, I wouldn’t call it fear, but then I’m looking forward to getting into the challenge that people were talking about and then overcoming them,” Mensah told Bundesliga.

Mensah arrives in Germany with considerable experience, having made 114 competitive appearances for Auxerre while also playing for Bordeaux in France.

His career has additionally taken him through Austria, Belgium and Portugal, giving him experience of different styles of European football.

He also played a key role in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, starting all four matches as the Black Stars reached the Round of 32.

Mensah is now preparing for his first Bundesliga campaign with Koln, who begin the new season against Hoffenheim on Saturday.

The Ghanaian will be hoping his experience and international pedigree can help him make a strong impression in Germany.
