World Cup 2026: Senegal face injury concerns ahead of must-win Iraq clash
Senegal’s preparations for their crucial World Cup showdown against Iraq have been disrupted by injury and fitness concerns, with goalkeeper Édouard Mendy expected to miss the match and several key players absent from training.
The Lions returned to training in New Brunswick, New Jersey, on Tuesday, less than 24 hours after their defeat to Norway, a result that has left their hopes of progressing from Group I hanging in the balance.
According to confirmation from the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), Mendy suffered an injury during the match against Norway and is now likely to be unavailable for Friday’s encounter in Toronto.
The goalkeeper’s situation adds to the growing list of concerns facing head coach Pape Thiaw as Senegal attempt to revive their campaign.
Training was also conducted without three important outfield players. Nicolas Jackson, Ismaïla Sarr and Pape Gueye did not take part in the session and instead remained under medical supervision and treatment.
Their absence was particularly notable given the significance of the upcoming fixture. Senegal enter the match against Iraq knowing that anything less than a positive result could end their hopes of extending their stay at the tournament.
Despite the missing players, the remainder of the squad trained normally as preparations continued for Friday’s contest, scheduled for 19:00 GMT in Toronto, Canada.
The defeat to Norway has complicated Senegal’s position in Group I and increased the pressure on the team ahead of the final round of matches. The Lions now find themselves needing a strong response after a disappointing start to the competition.
Kalidou Koulibaly and his teammates face a challenging task. Not only must they secure a convincing victory over Iraq, but they may also require favourable results elsewhere if they are to finish among the best third-placed teams and reach the Round of 16.
The contrast between the circumstances and the objective is clear. Senegal are preparing for one of the most important matches of their campaign while dealing with injuries and the absence of several influential players.
With qualification hopes still alive, Friday’s meeting with Iraq represents a final opportunity for the Lions to reignite their World Cup challenge. Whether they can overcome their setbacks and deliver the result they need remains the key question heading into the decisive encounter in Toronto.
